It had been in a barn for eleven years and the rear wheel would not turn. That is why it was 900 euro, and that is also why nobody else had bid on it.
What a monolever actually is
BMW's single-sided swingarm, introduced on the R80 in 1985. The final drive housing is the swingarm, and the wheel bolts to it from one side.
The practical effect is that a rear wheel change takes about four minutes and no wheel alignment afterwards. Once you have lived with that, conventional chain-driven rear ends start to feel like an imposition.
The seized drive
Eleven years of standing had let water into the final drive housing and rusted the bearings solid. Everyone we spoke to said the same thing, which was do not touch it, they are expensive and they are specialist.
They are neither. The whole assembly comes apart with a bearing puller and a torque wrench, the bearings and crown seal are a stocked BMW item, and the shimming is documented precisely in the factory manual. It took a weekend and cost 340 euro in parts.
Everyone said do not touch the final drive. It was a weekend and 340 euro in parts. The bad reputation is doing a lot of unearned work.
The airhead advantage
Two cylinders, both accessible from outside the bike without removing anything. Valve clearances take twenty minutes with feeler gauges and no special tools. Carburettors are two Bings, which are peculiar but extremely well documented.
There is no radiator, no water pump, no thermostat and no coolant. For a bike you intend to maintain yourself for years, the absence of an entire cooling system is worth more than any amount of power.
What it cost
See the table. The expensive items were not the ones we expected. Paint and powder coat came to 1,100 euro, which is more than the bike, the final drive rebuild and the carburettors combined.
Why we ride it
It was supposed to be the project we sold to fund the next one. Then it turned out to be comfortable for four hours, capable of 130 all day, economical enough to be irrelevant, and completely unbothered by rain, cold or being left outside.
The cafe racer is prettier. This is the one with the miles on it.

Common questions
What does monolever mean on a BMW?
It is BMW's single-sided swingarm, introduced on the R80 in 1985. The final drive housing forms the swingarm and the rear wheel bolts on from one side, so a wheel change takes minutes and needs no alignment afterwards.
Is a BMW final drive rebuild difficult?
It has a worse reputation than it deserves. The assembly comes apart with a bearing puller and a torque wrench, bearings and seals are stocked items, and the shimming is documented in the factory manual. Ours took a weekend and 340 euro.
Are BMW airheads good for beginners to maintain?
Yes. Both cylinders are accessible without removing bodywork, valve clearances take twenty minutes with feeler gauges, and there is no cooling system at all to go wrong.
How much does an R80 build cost?
Ours came to about 4,680 euro over eighteen months including the 900 euro donor. Paint and powder coating was 1,100 of that, more than the bike, final drive and carburettors combined.
