A scrambler is a road bike given enough ground clearance, suspension travel and tyre to survive being ridden somewhere it should not be. High pipes, wide bars, dual-sport rubber, and a seat you can move around on.
The originals were exactly that: fifties and sixties road bikes with the lights taped up for weekend off-road racing, before purpose-built dirt bikes existed. Everything about the look is a solution to a real problem. The pipes are high because water and rocks are low. The bars are wide because leverage matters when the front lets go.
It came back because it makes sense again. Roads are bad, donors are cheap, and the geometry forgives a rider who is still learning.
